Most probably, you work in a cubicle.
A lot of us spend more of our waking hours in our office cubicle than anywhere else. So it’s surprising that most people do not care about how their office cubicles look. It is now the right time to pay more attention to your cubicle’s appearance and how it feels to you. Here are some useful tips on how to improve the facade of your office space:
1. Clean everything.
Get everything off your desk and clean it. You will be surprised by the amount of dust and grime your table has. Also clean your equipment, cabinets, chairs, computer monitor, CPU, and keyboard, and everything else on and in your office desk. Make this a habit at least once every two weeks.
In addition to this, if you eat inside, make sure to throw leftovers out of your cubicle instead of using the trash bin inside it. This will help you keep your office nice and clean.
2. Put some lights.
Make sure that your cubicle is well-lit at all times when you are there. This will not only make your cubicle look good, it will also help you work more effectively.
3. No wires.
If it’s possible, use a wireless mouse and a wireless keyboard. Doing away with wires can greatly improve the look of your work station. If you cannot, try your best to hide the cables by tying them together. It’s also better to run long cables along the walls rather than have these wires cross the center of your cubicle.
4. Organize your things.
If you’ve been with your current employer for a long time, then you might have a lot of personal stuff lying around. A picture of your family or a son’s toy might be on your desk. Although these things personalize our office space and help us remember what really matters in life, they should not get in the way.
Put this stuff at the edge of your desk away from you, while keeping the office supplies, the phone, and other things that you use most often close to you. You can also pin your family pictures on the cubicle walls. This way, your table will be less cluttered.
There are two points to remember about office-personalization. First, remember that your personal stuff should not distract you from work. This means you should leave the PSP at home. Also, too much personalization is sometimes considered unprofessional by many office managers.
5. Go paperless.
By going paperless, you don’t only save the environment; you also beautify your office. You can do this in many ways. For instance, limit the printing of your emails, office documents, and reports. There is no sense in printing out every e-mail that you receive. For those documents that you need to print and file, make sure that you adopt a system to keep everything organized and easy to find. Place in-trays and out-trays whenever necessary.
6. Have a plant.
You might want to consider bringing a potted plant to the office. It requires extra work like making sure it gets enough sunlight and water, but you might benefit from the calming green it has and the extra oxygen it provides.
